OK for people thinking this is all about negativity here is something positive.
Friend of French Chief Membertou expressed solidarity with them through a gesture of JOINING HIS hand with French leaders hand by linking the pointing fingers together of each person.

brother, companion, and equal, showing this equality by
joining together the fingers of each hand which we call
the index or pointing finger."
