I was referring to basic programming skills, the CS grads that interviewed with us were universally awful. They couldn't even come up with a basic open files / read data / write data / close files (aka "copy a file") sequence on a whiteboard, when all we wanted to see was basic pseudo-code of the process, saying from the start that we didn't gaf about syntax.
It was a major red pill to see just how bad they were, not just bad but awful. Note that I had no problem when I got hired to work there, and while I"m a CS grad, that was from the late '80s, and, I started playing with TTL chips and LEDs as a kid in the mid '70s before mass-market home computers.
