I know deserts in the western half of North America have lots of stuff growing above the ground, which is why erosion used not to be that big of a problem till people started moving in and taking out all of the native flora to make way for fields, houses, roads, parks, etc., which is what led to the famous Dust Bowl back in the 1930s, and that frequently leads to dust storms in the region.
