Yeah, sounds dumb, caring about the graphics in a movement gamemode. I'm sure that pretty much nobody else that plays them gives a shit, and would just pick whichever thing is harder or plays better. Which they do. Neither have I given it any thought in other things of this sort that I liked to play.
But that's just them. I think it's an unappreciated part of the mode, the scenery you get to look at. I mean, there's obviously work put into it. Pretty much every map has it's own little style and it's obvious the creator put some work and thought into how it looks. Otherwise, every single map would just be default shapes to jump on in a big gray box. And even maps that are just that have something special to look at.
It's similar with bhop or surf. The gameplay itself gets pretty much all the attention, but I think there's some maps that just have a really cool look to them which sadly gets ignored. But it's more understandable for those modes because they're kind of more fast-paced, you don't really get to sit around and look at stuff, you're constantly moving and getting teleported through the map.
When it comes to climb, it's a thing you take at your own pace unless you're running it. No matter the map, you can stop at any point of it and just look around, which I like to do. Nor does it have any teleports, a lot of maps have a finish that's almost entirely vertical to where you started from, so you get to look at pretty much the entire path you went through once you reach the end of it. It's basically perfect for you to be able to take the scenery in.
I already rambled about this, but I guess it was worth repeating.
Not that this is a thing special to 1.6 or Source. It's the same gamemode in both, and both have pretty looking maps.
