People from most STEM backgrounds will have at least some programming experience these days, even if it's just MATLAB or some shit, and often they're eager to move into dev roles.
We took a chemistry grad on after a 2 week "work experience" placement because I could tell he'd be able to learn on the job and he was fine to pair with.
Degree is nice, but most modern day dev work is essentially plumbing that you can learn as you go, as long as there are experienced people about to keep things right during code review.
