"It's getting to be so late, Dr. Clark." the assistant to the executive officer of Spaghetti Town General Hospital taps her clipboard. "And I know you've had to travel. I don't think anyone would blame you if you want to head back to your hotel and figure it out in the morning."
Dr. Clark shakes his head.
>"The records left behind are..... obscure and incomplete, to say the least. You called me here to serve in this capacity after a sudden need arose. If I'm only in town for a few days, I need to catch up at once so I can do more than give a few physicals and shuffle some papers around, hmmm?"
"I don't think anyone expects you to perform any complicated procedures--"
>"As well they shouldn't, it's been a number of years since I switched fields from orthopedic medicine. But if I can organize these records and offer a steady hand for the few days that I'm here, it will make my successor's job far easier. And if there are any emergencies that command my attention, well, I would be doing a grave disservice if I were not prepared."
The assistant beams at him. "Well, we're honored to have the assistance of such a brilliant mind, even if only for a few days."
Dr. Clark smiles wryly.
>"Your words are appreciated but they miss the mark. It's not brilliance, but diligence. Most people, I find, are QUITE intelligent indeed."
>"But so many of them simply lack the will to PAY ATTENTION."
