Even in very inhospitable areas, people who domesticated some animals, kinda achieved more "stability" over those who didn't. As example, reindeer herding. As long as your herd remains healthy and alive, you have guarantee that you will not go hungry. Neigboring tribes either adapted, or died out because could not compete with herders. From those, who adapted, ones who had gene mutation responsible for empathy against animals, they generally had better results, because they could "read" that animal better.
A lot of our behavioural patterns comes from some random mutations tens or hundreds of years ago. There are reason why we behave like we behave.
