Look at India's history. Their caste system is inherently tied to their religion and it has decimated their human spirit, creativity and their lot in life. Instead of striving to be better, their religion and belief system incorporates and brainwashes the majority of their people that their misery and lot in life is justified because they were born into a certain class or caste. Majority are untouchables, and they deserve to be poor and downtrodden because their religion and belief system states that they deserve this because of some cosmic or karmic belief that they were "evil" in their past life and they should stay that way to atone for their "past evils". Their families and their whole entire tribes deserve to live that way in perpetuity, and better be submissive to it and not do anything because you will "surely" be reincarnated in a better caste system after you die. It's seriously one of the evil social structures in the world. This has cemented to Indians, especially born in the upper castes, that they are "superior" and has instilled this arrogance so famous among Indians. It's no wonder the Muslims easily steamrolled them. No point fighting for a society that actively oppresses you. India became a bitch to Muslim and Christian powers for thousands of years.
Elites want this setup for obvious reasons. They want the rich to be where they are at and the plebs or "useless eaters" where they are at. The status quo won't be touched or there will hardly be any revolts/reforms if your belief system states that your present predicament is your just desserts for something you did in your previous life.
Contrast that with Christianity where it states that all human beings are valuable in the sight of God and that all have equality of choice and there's only one life, and after you die, judgment from God. You will make most of your one life on Earth.
