Also, it sounds to me like you believe the diameter of the bullet determines its energy, thats wrong. Its the load that determines the energy behind the round.
The argument is not that something like a 308 is less likely to kill someone, its that a pistol calibre round of 9mm or greater with the appropriate load, is more than enough to kill within a defensive scenario of an attack closing in at short distances.
