In my experience even at the philological faculty many people don't really give a shit about literature, or get bewitched by it in the same way as a caveman gets bewitched by lighting and end up reading absolutely fucking everything that gets in their way and thereby having no sense of aesthetics, understanding of book's inner philosophy and taste at all. Like, I remember that one girl from my high school who was the only person in class besides me who cared about literature both as a subject and as a hobby, but she got impressed by some undisputed masterpiece just as much as she got impressed by some teenage-oriented shitty fantasy written solely for the purpose of getting shekels. So I guess such people just view literature just as some sort of cheap entertainment overall
