To create a robot intended to do work in a humans place you'd have to tear up the earth to mine precious metals for electronics using borderline slave labour (like in Africa and China right now) which defeats the purpose, then there's the massive pollution & industrial waste from manufacturing them as well as the constant upkeep and yearly models.
A new humanoids species on the other hand would only require food and training to keep them going and large scale manufacturing in test tubes would appear to be far cheaper.
