The reason UPS and FedEx survive as private companies is because they're a better alternative than USPS
One time I received a package in the mail that seemed to have the wrong items in it, not what I ordered. I sent the guy I got it from a picture of the package, and he said that it was definitely the box he shipped, but the contents were different. I had ordered a VCR that could output to USB to save videos on my computer. What I received was a beat-up box with a cat toy inside.

There was also a letter from a mail processing place in Georgia saying my box had been damaged, but when I called them they literally told me I had to open fraud investigation with the mail police. Then, I never heard back.
