If your goal of holding onto your integrity and courage risks your psychological and safety needs then more often than not you are fighting a lost cause. It's better to retreat/go down the ladder and then try to climb up somewhere else. In your example you are trying hard to acquire esteem point in your family, but they focus on the love and belonging atribute and try to strengthen it so as to have their basic needs in check.
