We were bound economically to Germany, plus they threatened to roll their tanks and force themselves onto us, so there was no way we could refuse joining them. Then the communists came to power, our pact with Germany was over, and we became a socialist country in the USSR. Thing is, we were actually well off then. Our economy and production was better, arts, music and sports were valued, we didn't have much choice in what we could buy for food, cars or other tech, but what we did have was all really good. We used to be the strongest soviet military in the balkans. We had low crime rates. We didn't have very high wages, but it was enough to live on and every person could afford to spend his 2 weeks a year vacation in a foreign country or resort, plus, wealth disparity was one of the lowest in the world. Also our pensions were good. Then this pseudo-democracy capitalism came, we scrapped a ton of factories, sport and the arts are no longer valued, our military is garbage, we have plenty of imported products and nice stuff, but most people can't afford them since most people's wages are shit, wealth disparity is higher than ever, pensions are a goddamn joke and most retired folk can't live on that money alone, crime rates are up and our taxes are constantly getting higher
