in sofia you can ride the bus with no ticket, as long as a controller doesn't get on it. controllers hang around on stops and make random checks on busses. (having a controller on every bus is too expensive for us). they check if you have a card and if it's up to date, or a punched ticket. some people choose to buy and punch their ticket but some don't. and every bus' punching machine makes a different hole pattern, so you can't use the same ticket on different busses. and most people, when they reach their stop, they leave their punched ticket on a seat so someone else can pick it up and hold onto it in case of a checkup.
