You can't get a job, you can't get a decent house, you can't even walk down the fucking street lest you be shunned by every person who passes you by. You go to jail for even a minor offense and you're toast. Human rights? Forget it. You forfeited those when you went into the slammer. Your family might get harassed too just for being related to you. Hell, you can't even cheat on your wife without massive social repercussions if someone you know finds out. The Japanese would rather commit suicide than go to jail, because at least then you won't have to suffer the soul-crushing shame that comes after. There is nothing - and I mean NOTHING - more important to Asians, especially Japs, than saving face and preserving honor.
