>>20562268I think it's mostly thanks to John Carmack who is a amazing programmer. He wanted to share his code with everyone so they can learn from it and iterate on it. So games like Doom and Quake are just public and anyone can use the code to learn and develop their own works. Carmack lost interest in video games and he gets into cars and rocket science and even AGI so he has more important things to focus his big brain on. It's a very kind act from a very rich man who can do whatever he wants, so he gave away his source code. Most companies are not like John Carmack. He deserves a ton of respect and praise. He did the heavy lifting for us.
