>William's family and their fellow English quickly blamed the local Jewish community for the crime and demanded justice from the ecclesiastical court of Bishop William de Turbeville. Members of the Jewish community were asked by the Bishop to attend the court and submit to a trial by ordeal, but the local Norman sheriff, John de Chesney, advised them that the ecclesiastical court had no jurisdiction over them, as they were not Christians.>He then took the Jews into protection in Norwich Castle. After the situation had calmed down, they returned to their homes. This is a pretty common story. Jews would commit heinous crimes and drive mass populations into debt and the common people would become angry for obvious reasons and retaliate. But the reason they were never actually dealt with beyond simply moving with their things to other regions of Europe is because higher courts of Christianity would intervene because jews were "exempt" from Christian laws (this is the exact same reason they were all enabled to practice usury and become filthy rich off the backs of peasants). The crusades were also largely orchestrated by Jewish powers in conjunction with Christian leaders. The child crusades are an interesting one to read about.
