It doesn't fucking matter if it's a "less correct" term to call people from the United States of America. People will say whatever flows best and there is no right way to say anything. Also, as a native speaker of spanish, I can assure you that no one fucking says "estadounidense" unless you're speaking formally, otherwise people say "americano" or "gringo" when in just casual conversation.
