It has to do with the fact that many Gnostic groups claim Paul as their main apostle while Irenaeus claims Simon Magus to be the father of all heresy, and a lot of what the canon scriptures say about Simon Magus is verifiably untrue. And if you look at the two of them, there are a lot of similarities, mainly stemming from them both claiming to have met Jesus after His death. Paul’s Christ is a celestial being who imparts divine knowledge through revelation; that is, hallucinations/visions, like Enoch’s Metatron or Michael or Melchizedek in the Dead Sea Scrolls.
