before google there was altavista and ask jeeves
altavista had features google didn't get til the 00s like image video and audio search
the only thing about aol that was oppresive is people THOUGHT you had to use the browser
It was actually good for dial up if you were just checking your knows using aol keywords since all it fetched was text and used images already pre-loaded in software, plus email was just there
