The astronauts were instructed to park the rover a certain distance away and the commands were relayed from Mission Control
Because of time lag, the motion was preplanned ahead of time and issued 2 seconds ahead of the countdown
On Apollo 15 the tilt mechanism malfunctioned
On Apollo 16 the rover was parked too close, so the planned controls did not keep the ascent stage centered
They got it (mostly) right on Apollo 17
