And the revolution didn't work out great for them, but that's partially because France made them pay for the goods they lost during the revolt (a.k.a the slaves themselves) so they were essentially buying their own freedom. They were still paying back this massive debt well into the 20th century, long after slavery had been abolished all across the western world. I suppose it's better than being slaves at least.
