Maybe doing small things, like when he takes her out for dinner he restricts himself to a very small meal, or no meal. Makes an overt effort to make himself look respectable and somewhat manage his appearance (no very loose fitting clothing like picrel). Being confronted with picrel would not leave a good impression but if he's well dressed with clothing to de-emphasize the gut, it'd help.
