Smoking bring tar into your lungs, and supposedly tar is what causes cancer. Tar is too thick to enter your lung tissue though, so it just lays down onto your lung surface, which causes a protective layer.
That way most damaging components in the air can't enter your lung because they stick to this tar layer.
What really causes cancer is irradiated particles in the air, which would usually enter the lung tissue and get filtered out through liver and kidney, but because it sticks to the tar layer it stays in your lungs longer, having more time to irradiate your lungs.
Most of this radioactive matter comes from coal power plants, as a matter of fact a coal power plants spits out more radioactive dust in a year than a nuclear power plant in its entire projected lifespan, safe for nuclear disasters.
