I was in gate and i do remember them covering up all our windows with thick construction paper, it was not long after 9/11 and the anthrax things was also fresh in peoples minds but the teacher said that the reason that they covered the windows is so if terrorists invaded we could hide inside without them seeing. We all accepted that at the time but now it sounds batshit crazy. I also remember one time in 4rth grade in class a coud of yellow gas started pumping through the vent and we had to all run out of the room. They didn't let us back in for the rest of the day but the explanation was that they were using a new cleaner to clean the AC units (which again sounds absolutely nonsensical now that im an adult)
