They absolutely thrash offroad if you have a 500-1000 watt one, and they have decent range since they're so light. The range edge definitely goes to the gas powered bike though, and you can carry extra gas whereas extra batteries cost around $200 at the cheapest. It's definitely something to look into on top of a dirt bike or as a cheaper alternative. They also make offroad dedicated ebikes, basically a fat tire mountain bike on steroids, but literally any cheap mountain bike and an electric bike conversion kit will do. Hub motor conversion kits are as easy as slapping the motor tire on and mounting the battery.
