turns out one of the input methods for japanese keyboards is just to type out the romanization and it'll automatically convert it to katakana. from there when you finish a word and hit space you either hit enter to keep it as katakana or hit space an extra time first to change it to hiragana. i think you can also select various kanji with extra spacebaring but i don't know enough about the different writing systems to say for sure on that one
