Objectively it could be as you say: we are slaves to our desire of joy. But who cares about objectiveness anyway? Your world is carved by your mind, it will as bad or good as you think it is, and you clearly don't enjoy suffering, so why don't fully dedicate to have a good time?
Imagine yourself as both and spectator and player, because life it's an experience. Like a movie or videogame, it may be sad, funny, joyful, etc. But the point of it is to enjoy the ride.
