Pic related is Lake Baikal, the deepest lake in the world with areas over 1.5 km deep... and its clearly a strip mine. The great lakes also look like strip mines, and they don't appear on maps earlier than the 'i600s', though I don't know if the 'i600s' were ~400 years ago, or ~2400 years ago, or even older than that. Any idea on timelines?
