Pastor Steve only has it half right.
Faith and works are 2 sides of the same coin. You can't have faith, without works to accompany.
You can't have "yes" without "no", you can't have "pleasure" without "pain. You can't have "old" without "new". There's no such thing as "fast" without "slow".
It's by faith that you're saved, and not of yourself it is the gift of God, that's true. Your works don't save you, the things you do for God don't save you...BUT, they are EVIDENCE of your faith.
You need to at least try to attempt to obey God's commandments. Even if you're not perfect, even if you suck badly..it's still a genuine effort that shows your faith. That's why faith is DEAD without works.
Judge a man by his actions, not only by what he says.
To be saved, you need to repent, you need to tell God you're sorry for breaking his holy commandment to live righteously and that you want him to be a part of your life. Then you need to confess "Jesus is Lord" and be baptized for remission of sins. Then you will receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. THIS IS CRUCIAL TO SALVATION AND NON-NEGOTIABLE.
Once you're saved, then, you begin to walk in that salvation, doing your best to put away degeneracy from your life. You're gonna fall, you're gonna slip...but that's okay, God's Grace has got your back. As long as you genuinely seek God and express that faith in him through action UNTIL THE END, you will be saved.
