They succeed (income wise from clients) because the idea of a clever lad who claims to know better than the markets is very appealing to fools with money. Lots of people just don't want to hear that you should just dump all your cash in to the s&p and do nothing but add more regardless of market conditions. Upgrade that to nasdaq with leverage if you want more oomf.
