I'm an atheist, but for all the talk of atheist being smug and preachy and obnoxious, I've never met a single other atheist who was anything like that. The closest I ever came was a few years ago when I was talking to this vaguely obnoxious fella, and the topic of religion came up. He was the kind of person who would loudly and proudly proclaim his bisexuality, but when we started talking about religion, he got nervous and shyly whispered to me that he was an atheist.
To me, that sums up the whole hostility towards atheism thing. Nobody wants to be seen as being like this seemingly rare stereotype of an atheist that only really exists in religious propaganda (aka fedora memes). So now you have a whole generation of self hating atheists who, a lot of the time, refuse to even use that label anymore.
I don't know. I've always thought that maybe the stereotype does exist, but only in the US where you have even crazier, preachier religious people and it's basically an arms race over which side can be more annoying than the other. Thank fuck I don't live in some religious shithole like that either way.
