it's also worth noting that the magic is pretty tame relatively speaking. people need technology to support actually being able to do anything and it's main advantage just ends up being versatility. mages end up being the most decisive units in battle because of that versatility, but their main tools are flight that's outclassed by planes and artillery that's outclassed by cannons
