American bacon is quite tasty, but only because it has so much fat. It is only nice when it is overcooked and crunchy. The best no doubt for BLT sandwiches, pasta dishes and burgers.
As for breakfast and other uses, I prefer English bacon because it has the right balance of fried meat and fat. It is hammy and bacon-y at once because of the rind and streaky bit at the back.
