The bengal kills by suffocating its prey as in this case. Having a "guard arm" prevents this from happening. I would also offer that the tiger clearly as curious at first, not predatory. If he had swatted the tiger back on the snout it would have been a first step at establishing dominance, akin to what circus trainers do.
