A disposable shield is simply the more efficient option for mass produced mechs like Gundom has, they need to be made with cost effectiveness in mind and constructing the robot out of the super durable materials/giving them the extra protective coating that can deflect literally everything is usually reserved for prototypes/the protagonist's mech. There are a couple with external armour add ons, but they really just serve the same purpose a shield would and is jettisoned once the armour serves its purpose, plus they hinder manoeuvrability and add extra weight so they're not a good option for grunts either.
