We do not live in a fair, competitive system. A few decades ago here in the US the vast majority of farms were small, independent, usually family run. Big agriculture underwent a huge corporate lobbying campaign where they restricted the kinds of wholesale vendors small farmers would sell their goods to, secured huge corporate welfare and tax benefits for themselves while denying it to small farms, and introduced regulations that were easy for industrial farmers to comply with but not for small farmers. Now less than 20% of farms in the US are independent.
