Go around the world, even first world countries, it's not nearly as common to have dishwashers. And clothes dryers.
The American man put such a huge emphasis on acquiring the things that would make his wife's life easier. And it's amazing how it's turned out, with women less happy than ever. Believing that even using a dishwasher that men created would mean she is being 'subjugated' by her husband or family.
Men throughout the 1900s really pushed hard to bring home things that would improve their wive's lives, and yet didn't put half as much emphasis on reducing the number of men dying in physical labor jobs. One of the reasons OSHA was created, besides the rising death rates, was because women were started to enter the workplace. If women are going to be going into the work force, now we need to make it safer.
