oh no you've got the right idea but that's my point. my degree was literally only about coding and there was a different concentration having to do with IT infrastructure. the problem is that you come out knowing how to write an algorithm that sorts every word in a book by number of occurrences in less than 1 second per 10,000 words but that's a purely academic exercise. ask someone to write a coherent program that someone would actually launch to do something with and nobody has a fucking clue where to start.
