Before the start of freshman year, the school held a sports festival where you could try out for various teams. On the list of boys' sports was Dance Team, so I figured I'd go try out. It turns out that at 3A schools the dance team is also the cheerleaders. Mary's older sister Kathy who was team captain was pissed to see my face. I thought the reason why was because she didn't want any male team members. I found out later the reason she was so angry with me was because she thought I was joining the team to get closer to her sister who already rejected me. The coach overrode her complaints because I was the only boy who came to try out and they needed a male student for a dance competition that was adding couples to the 3A division. I remember Kathy telling me "If you mess with my sister I'll rip off your head and I'm not talking about the one on your shoulders."
