the idea is that asians don't parcticularly care for slapstick. most japanese comedy for example is wordplay, but when someone makes a joke about misunderstandings caused by ambiguous grammar rules it can't get translated so regardless of whether it's dogshit or amazing westerners can't understand it so they just forget about it. there's a similar problem with situational humor since a joke about opening up a shop to serve takoyaki in the winter doesn't make any fucking sense unless you're pretty familiar with a day to day japanese lifestyle.
on the other hand every bit of japanese slapstick you see you'll understand which makes it far more memorable regardless of quality, so everyone gets the impression that it's the most popular form of comedy in japan
