Perhaps not an overwhelming majority but back then /lit/ was the best place on the internet for in-depth discussion about literature. Most posters were still elitists but not without reason. I'm not saying you can't find the odd quality post there even now but you need to sift through a lot of content seemingly meant for people who have issues with their attention span.
