Is it the money? Partially given the vast sums, but if they're caught they're fucked so there has to be a higher purpose to their actions, something that goes beyond money.
So if they're all lying about the existence of space, fake the existence of satellites to "confirm" space is real, etc. it's stands to reason what they're hiding is that Earth is all there is in the physical sense. We're trapped here in a limited reality where we really are the centre of everything where the heavens themself pay homage by going around us.
Flat, round, torus, whatever, doesn't fucking matter at that point now does it? Well ultimately it does but initially not so much given we're now faced with an international cabal that has intentionally kept God from us that must be dealt with.
