i think it captured that 80s or 90s attitude of 'fuck it' where caring about anything. the grunge movement wasn't SO long before 4chan and the tail end of that was emo. people just didn't care it was like we were all trying as hard as possible to be the most massive edgelord but idk if 4chan feels like that anymore
actually i think memes have always been shit i was going to complain about the people spamming their billionth wojak edit but maybe things have been the same. it just feels worse, its like when i try to talk to anyone they're very insulated or they're not really talking 'like themselves' but rehashing a bunch of learned buzzwords. now THAT was not like early 4chan
