I was always broke and sometimes games outright weren't visible to my country so I'd torrent them off of piratebay or skidrow. Normally I'd only pirate games around 1-2 years after their release anyways, but since games these days are complete shit, that's out the window. I don't make it a habit of pirating indie games until about 2-3 years later. Like last year, I downloaded Rogue Legacy. Year before, Wayward Souls for Android. Good game, by the way. Came to PC too.
If I pirate a game and I like it, I note the game's name and price down and pay for it when I can afford it. I didn't bother to with games for old consoles like gba or nds though; they're old enough for it to not affect the devs.
Now, if it's a game I'm really hyped for, I save up for it. If I can't afford it, too bad. I'll just buy it when I can.
