When I went down that rabbit hole I recall finding they did this by arguing the gospels are all just independent stories made up from a source document they call Q and from copying each other. So in this case the author of Mathew just needlessly copied a verse from Mark they argue. But Mark has Jesus say this one only goes out by prayer. So where did the fasting part come from? My guess was they managed to remove the fasting part from Mark long back, and then from Matthew in the modern day.
