Even if you live (for whatever reason) in a city apartment you should have a herb shelf so you have herbs to use to cook with (also a skill everyone should posess). Additionally you can help out at one of these comunity gardens. Yes I know they are commie filled, but then again your presence will help to make it less hipster ridden by being a responsible person producing food inside a city. And bonus social interaction.
