Maybe it is because college is still preserved as the “gateway to a better education”. If your daughter was intelligent and/or is an intellectual and wanted to learn more, most people would tell her to go to college. The truth of the matter now is that you can find a similar or better education online. For example You don’t need to go to college to get the knowledge of a historian, as long as you are determined you can become one in all but name.
TLDR: most people think college is the only way to get an education (despite that that not being the case anymore).
