>>12526014It's indicative of the sort of food the working class had back when people were working down coal mines and steel mills before and leading upto the industrial revolution in the UK. So it was calorie dense and cheap because the people doing hard labour would burn through a fuck load of calories every day. It was especially common in places like the North where much more of the working class were doing hard manual labour. That's also where a lot of the dinner meals were hotpots, used lots of gravy, dumplings, mashed potato, batter on things like toad in the hole or yorkshire puddings and were heavy on meat like sausages.
I'm from the north originally in a working class family and so grew up with our parents simply inheriting those habits from prior genetations and that sort of hearty food tastes fucking good to me, although not so much beans on toast. But definitely things like toad in the hole, pic related. Covered in gravy and onions and stuff like that, god fucking damn that's a working mans food.
